Remember These Words: Technical Debt

Hi, my name’s Kevin O’Hara. I’m the CTO of LevelEleven.

I use Salesforce to manager our entire customer support business and also manage our installed licenses at all of our customer locations.

My “Salesforce Tip of the Week” is for all of the admins out there, and it’s all about keeping it simple.

I spent about five or six years doing salesforce.com consulting, and in that time I spent a lot of my efforts working with admins to basically undo all of the things that they’d done to Salesforce.

So, every time you go to create a new field or a new workflow, ask yourself: ‘Is this something that’s critical to the business? Is this something that we’re going to report on?’ Because every time that you add something like that, you’re adding additional, what we call in the development world, “technical debt.” These are things that you have to manage and maintain over time, and it’s get very, very confusing once your database starts to grow past the point of being reasonable.

Another good thing to do is, from time to time, go through a periodic review of what you have in Salesforce. Try to clean some things up, get rid of some unused fields, unused workflows, things like that.

In the end, it’s all about keeping it simple, and it’ll make your lives a lot easier.
