Without a doubt, you’re having a blast at Dreamforce ’14 right now. You’re probably making great connections, learning about inspiring new products and maybe even landing some new business to boot. But hey — San Francisco is a big city with a lot of exciting things going on, so if you’re staying a few extra days or feel like taking a break from all the #DF14 festivities, here are 11 ideas for places to see while visiting San Fran!
1.Golden Gate Bridge:
The most iconic landmark in Frisco, if you haven’t seen it you should check it off your sightseeing list. The scenery is gorgeous, and there’s free parking and low cost walking tours — or, rent a bike and ride across if you prefer!
2. Muir Woods
If massive California redwoods pique your interest, head to Muir Woods. It’s filled with amazing wildlife and makes for an easy escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. With everything from family-friendly trails to paths more suited for the seasoned hiker, Muir Woods is an exciting destination for any group.
3. Alcatraz Prison
While it stopped serving as a federal prison in 1963, Alcatraz is another iconic destination in San Francisco. Now operated by the National Parks Service, self-guided walking tours are offered 7 days a week and about of 2.5 hours. For the adventurous types, night tours are offered as well. Check out the place known as “Devils Island” and see how Al Capone spent his final days!
4. Ike’s Place
Ike’s Place, a sandwich joint famous for not only it’s delicious subs but it’s appearance on Travel Channel’s hit show Man Vs. Food, is a place you should eat. Go for the famous Kryptonite – a beast of a sandwich featuring Avocado, Bacon, Beer Battered Onion Rings, Pepper Jack, Ham, Mozzarella Sticks, Pastrami, Pesto, Roast Beef, Salami, Stuffed Jalapeno Poppers and Turkey. It’s safe to say that if you can dream it, Ike’s will make it.
5. Legion of Honor
Situated on the northwest side of the city, this museum is one of the best showcases of European artwork. Filled with classical triumphs of architecture and timeless works, the museum (that doubles as a memorial) offers stunning tours and breathtaking views from the hill it is situated on. For a quiet afternoon, this is a great place to spend some time.
6. Union Square
If you’d like to do some shopping during your stay, Union Square is the place to go. They have everything from your big department stores to smaller, boutique shops — and consider topping it off with a stop at the Cheesecake Factory in their high rise location overlooking the square.
7. Lombard Street
The winding road of Lombard Street is a San Fran staple. This tourist destination is well worth seeing with its beautiful landscaping and incredible curvature. Drive a car down or just take a walk to the bottom. And while your stomach settles, head on over to the original Ghirardelli Square to hit up the street vendors and grab a ride on the Hyde trolley car.
8. China Town
Head into Chinatown for authentic Chinese food and shops. Once you walk through the gates on Grant Avenue and Bush street you will feel like you have entered a completely different country. Make sure to stop by the Hang Ah Tea Room, Americas oldest Dim Sum house and Hunan Homes restaurant for the most authentic Chinese cuisine.
9. Twin Peaks
The best place in the city to catch a sunrise or sunset, this walking trail is just a 20 minute drive from the city. While sometimes inhibited by fog, the view of the skyline and bay are still breathtaking. It’s a perfect place for pictures of the city and whole bay area. Make sure to bring a jacket, as it’s notorious for being chilly and windy.
10. Pier 39
Always buzzing with activity and people, Pier 39 is located just off the Embarcadero. Most famous for its heavy sea lion traffic, the wharf is home to multiple arcades, tourist shops and restaurants. It offers great views of the city and an authentic experience on the water.
11. Alamo Square Park
Finish your trip with world renowned ice cream and a world famous park. Stop by Bi-Rite Creamery and try a scoop of honey lavender or brown sugar with ginger caramel swirl. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the strawberry balsamic blend. Then take your ice cream over to the park to relax.
